“The idea of starting my own firm was not something I had given much thought to. But, when the marketing firm I was working for closed its PR division, I decided to go for it. I had been downsized 3 times over a 10 year span, all for budget cuts, so I was ready to be my own boss! Clark Communications started in my basement in 2005 with about 3 clients.”

“I was curious about how Sparrow’s name and logo was everywhere.”

“For me, the lightbulb went off while I was part-time at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. I was attending Michigan State University and had to do a job shadow. I was curious about how Sparrow’s name and logo was everywhere. I was told that all comes through Corporate Communications. I met with the VP and fell in love with the idea of helping connect a healthcare organization to its key audiences via PR channels.”

“I’ve run the business for more than 12 years now and have positioned the firm as a leading consultancy in the region. As well, it’s a sense of accomplishment to know you built something from nothing. It wasn’t even something I was thinking about until getting downsized!”

“…put your head down and give it 200 percent.”

“Do your homework. It’s great to dream, but to sustain that dream you must do your research and fully understand the market you’re trying to break into. Seek counsel from those that do what you want to do; integrate yourself in the trade circle so you’re ‘known’; find ways to differentiate yourself from the competition and then put your head down and give it 200 percent.”
